Sihanoukville (Cambodia) for xmas?

Hi all,

Hi BWonder! I know that this is an old post but we are planning to spend Crhistmas in Sihanoukville. Just curious if you ended up doing that and how the experience was and any words of wisdom.
Thanks!

Hi,

We spent last xmas and new year there. We stayed for 5 nights over xmas at the white beach hotel and really enjoyed it as we'd been slumbing it for some time so it was nice to have a wee bit of luxury. I.e a very clean room with huge bed and widescreen t.v along with breakfast included. I think we paid around $30 a night. This was pre-booked online. The small pool at the front wasn't amazing but enjoyable we seemed to have it to ourselves whenever we needed and was great for drinking bubbling with santa hats on xmas day. It's right across the road from Ochheuteal Beach. Really nice beach but can get annoying sometimes and wouldn't go there a night unless you further up near the centre with other tourists.

After xmas we then stayed in the Garden hill hotel on Victory hill. It is a bit out of the way and seemed a bit spooky at times due to it's size and lack of guests but for the price it was great. (We arranged a price with the manager for the time we stayed and they were quite flexible to give us a premium room for the price of a very basic one due to lack of guests) Had a huge pool and some nice roof space to chillout and do whatever. If you're a couple it would be ideal for quiet and relaxing time. I think it was quiet mainly as it's a bit of an old building and is/was needing a bit of a makeover but if you've been in 100's of dirt cheap hostels around Asia this place is really good if you get a deal (& have a bike).

As for Sihanoukville itself I would recommend a visit but I did find it a bit seedy a times especially a night close to the beach (I would avoid it unless theres lots of other tourists) and sitting on the beach we did get quite annoyed by some of the locals trying to sell things but that does happen everywhere.

Our plan whenever we arrive anywhere is to rent a motorbike asap so we can explore and if you don't do this I wouldn't recommend the garden hill resort as it's out the way unless your mobile. the weather was amazing and we had a really great time though. The price of food and drink etc... was fantastic. My brother was there a few months ago and he went on a trip to one of the islands and said it was amazing also. The food wasn't spectacular to be honest but we did find a couple of places we liked and one we loved which is the corner bar on victory hill. Fantastic pizzas and some good Brit food (we're a Scots/English couple) although the street itself is basically bars full of expats and Cambodian prostitutes but we never had any bother.

We didn't do as much exploring as we usually do but we saw quite alot of the area but mostly enjoyed chilling out before heading to Saigon. I would totally recommend you book somewhere before you arrive and most places can arrange a pick up even off the bus as it does get busy during the holidays.

Not one of our favorite places in Asia but well worth a visit. Sorry for going on a bit but once I'd started the memories flooded back!! -Let me know if you have any other questions.

regards
