Cokatoo island is meant to be a good viewpoint for the fireworks but, I think you have to buy tickets to get into the park now.
Im doing the same as you (except in Brisbane) and its gotten very boring doing stuff by myself, so I know exactly what you mean!

I'm in the same boat as you - I'm staying with family in Sydney and it's hard to meet people. Have only been here for week so have just started looking into the fireworks for NYE. If you want any company let me know!

I'm paying up and going on a cruise for New Years Eve. It is not cheap but definitely better than sitting on the hill and getting seriously bad sunburn even with sunscreen on. A few years back I was in the sun all day on 31 December and I got so badly burnt that a slight touch of my arm got chunks of a few layers of skin and I had 3rd degree burns. I was in pain for weeks after that day. That's why the last few years I have splurged a bit and spent up $375 and gone on a cruise. The one I have been on is called the South Passage. I did a lot of research and none were anywhere near as cheap as that which I could find. It was BYO food and drink so that is what brings the price down a lot.
If you can't splurge that bit more for a cruise, I'd certainly find someone to stay with so they can hold your space for you if you can't hold on to go to the toilet or need to get a drink etc.

Not sure about NYE, but if you want to meet up with some travellers / travel industry people while in Sydney feel free to check out the Travel Tribe that runs over there.
