Hi! My name is Marta, I'm 21 years old and I'm from Portugal.
I'm new to this forum and I decided to join it because it seems it can be pretty helpful for me. I'm finishing my degree in Journalism this year and I pretend to take a gap year in order to travel around the globe (preferably Asia and Australia). My intention at the begining was to spend the whole year travelling, but I've realized that it will be impossible to gather enough money to do such a thing, so my plan is to work for 6 months and then travel during the other half of the year. What I wanted to ask everyone is whether you know any good way to earn money in those 6 months. Is it better to work in my own country or choose another one with better wages (like the UK)? Do you know any good sites or companies where I can apply for a job overseas? What type of jobs do you advise me to take?
Hi Marta,
I'm planning on doing similar to you after i finish university in June, im going to work for 6 months then travel for 6 months. I'm from the UK and im going to try and find a job in a factory during the day andt try and find a bar job a few nights a week or look for a job doing nights were you can earn quite a bit doing 12 hour night shifts for good pay.
I don't know how much the pay is in portugal, but if you come UK im sure you can find a job here.
Good Luck,
Dom
Hi Dom. Thanks for your reply. I wouldn't mind working a lot during those six months if I could earn enough money to travel the other six without worrying about a low budget. Have you already thought about how much money it is needed to spend so much time travelling? Is it possible to earn everything you need in only six months?
The pay in Portugal is really bad. The average wage is like 600 euros a month, if you're lucky. Is it really easy to find a job there? I would love to work in England and I'm sure i would earn a lot more. Do i need a visa to work there?
Sorry to bother you with so many questions. lol
See you, Marta
In my 6 months of working i'm planning on earning about £6000/7000 to travel around for 6 months, mainly around Asia. Hopefully it should be enough...
Well because of these current times, it might not be really easy to find a job because places are still cutting jobs and have less jobs available but as far as I know from portugal because your in europe you don't need a visa but u'll have to double check on that.
Don't worry about the questions, thats what were all on here for. Any more questions just ask and ill do my best to help
Dom
As far as being able to travel cheap for a long time Asia (some of it) is a good call, not as much Australia I think. Here in Southeast Asia you can survive and enjoy yourself for very little money.

Dom... I think it will be impossible for me to earn all that money. If I work in Portugal I'll get like 5000 euros if I'm lucky to find two jobs. lol. Maybe I'll have to cut Australia off my list or work for more time than I thought I had to. Working in the UK would be great, but as if I'll be paying a rent and stuff I don't think it would compensate. Thanks once again, if I have more questions in the future, I'll ask!
Rasheed, thanks for the information about Asia. I already imagined that it was pretty cheap, speacially for us living in Europe. It makes southeast asia the perfect destination! Great beaches and landscapes, different culture, and cheap living. That's everything I need!
Sweet. If you come through northeastern Cambodia (waterfalls, volcanic lake, national park) give me a shout. I'm up here in Banlung.
Travelers who only spend a week in Cambodia (sad that they would do that to themselves) rarely get a chance to see the awesomeness up here. Give yourself time...

I'll bear that in mind, 'sheed. Cambodia must be a very beautiful place, I'd love to spend more than a week there, of course!
See you

Hi Marta, the UK and Portugal are both in the EU so you can work here without a visa. Wages here in the UK are quite good, but the cost of living is relatively high. There's not much point coming here to work and then shelling out lots of what you earn on rent, food, and transport costs-all of which are high here. I'd suggest you work in Portugal, maybe work two jobs and stick to s.e. Asia!
