Hi , bring filter masks for the air pollution in Mexico City , no kidding . Spend the extra money and always go for the no.1 or class a buses , or just go for it . Let's see - cheap bus , driver swigging tequila while dodging animals at night , then stops for pee break & falls asleep in cantina - or - the gas tank falls off the bus on a sheer mtn pass on the way to Oaxaca City . The rail system is grim , but a true adventure . A must see on the Yucatan are the ruins at Coba , many of which have yet to be excavated . Also the ruin at Tulum .
Generally ,brace yourself for delays in every type of service , which meant for me to slow down and breathe . Bring plenty of bug repellant - the good stuff - DEET . Be ready to bribe local officials and ticket agents , etc. . , a common practice to speed up the process
The people of Mexico are the best - however , theft of your belongings can and will occur if you aren't ever careful . And watch for the theives in hostels , it happens . Most often though I come across the famous "Moocher " , no fun after the reality sets in . Anyway Take Care and Enjoy , sounds like a great experience
