American couple desires to spend 6 months ( 180 days) or more in Europe, mostly Schengen area. I have read and understand the current rules. I just don't like them - I need more than 90 days. I am looking for a factual way to stay longer. I have the finances to do this, and am not a burden on the social system.
1. Not that I know of, the closest I can find is the Belgian category of Retirees:

2. Making an educated guess: You need to actually start a business and put your money where your mouth is before you get a visa of the "investor" type.
3. This varies from country to country. I know for a fact that you can be away from Germany for a max. of 180 days before your residency permit for Germany becomes invalid. By Schengen rules however you should be a min of 90 days in the issueing country and a max of 90 days in all other countries over a period of 180 days.
4. Spain - forget it, France I don't know. Germany and Belgium should be the easiest taking your situation into account. I would try Belgium and the visa linked above.
