Depends on what you are going to be doing in each country after you get there and how long you are staying in different places/cities for. Also depends on if your going to be camping some times or staying in hostels/hotels every night..
I think it would be a little bit difficult for Russia to be honest. I have never been there, but from what I know you have to let them know where you are staying(you need some kind of invitation from them or something like that) when you apply for a visa there, well at least I do as a Canadian. So I don't think you could just start hitchhiking, walking, or taking ferries around. I think you also need to register with the police when you get there as well, but I could be wrong. I think this probably applies to Americans as well, but again I may be wrong. If you are from somewhere else then it might not be a problem.
Ip_schnare is right!! You can't travel to Russia just like that. You will need to be invited. I was just in Russia for Christmas and I was on a tour. All our ground arrangements were done by a Russian supplier so they invited us over.

This is totally a 'how long is a piece of string' question. I'd say it depends on how much money you have. Do you have a budget in mind?
