I have only done Thailand before now but I did it on my own. The only thing I planned was where I was landing and when my return was. I took about 3 items of clothing and pretty much nothing else. I thought that the whole experience was amazing because of a small handful of things.....the people you meet....the places you discover yourself....and mostly....the random brilliance of not planning a thing. It made me feel like every day was going to be an experience and I was constantly excited. In my opinion, it is the only way to do things! By all means...read up on a few places...have some ideas in mind. But I find not making plans makes for the true experience that can't be beaten!
I too will be in Oz in July...but after doing a month in Thailand again!

June is a good time to be at the North end of Australia, if you travel from Sydney up the coast to Cairns you'll have a great time, it'll be warm enough to go snorkelling and sailing at the Whitsundays and to dive the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns. Most of the North East coast photos in my gallery were taken from May - July.
Weather wise in Sydney it's likely to be cold but not necessarily raining more than any other time of year, you could take a trip to the Blue Mountains, although I wouldn't recommend canyoning this time of year - it's too cold. As you travel North it'll start getting warmer around Brisbane, June is almost the middle of the "dry" season so you won't get any monsoonal type rain up there, January and February are the worst times for this.

I'm thinking keep it pretty open, although might book a couple of things before hand just so I have a little bit of an idea of where to head to. But definatly leave some wiggle room!
And thanks for the info on the weather, am feeling better about it now! Starting to get very excited - hate that it's still 5 months away.
Does anyone have an opinion on the best way to get from Sydney to Brisbane and then onto Cairns? Is it best to fly to each and then explore from there? In advance it seems to be cheaper to do that than to train it, but is the train/bus and then getting off to stop and see sights along the way better?

I'd probably get a greyhound bus pass or hire a van and drive, this gives you better flexability for where you want to stop and the amount of time you spend in each place. The train would be the least favourable option as the intercity link up the coast is pretty bad, within cities the train is a good way to get around.
Hi, I have the same problem the weather? I am in Oz from the 4th July to the 26th July I plan to rent a campervan (wicked campers) out from Cairns and travel down the east coast to sydney. Jugding from your post it will probably be the best to stay up north for the majoirty of our time. Does anyway know what the weather is usauallly around Fraser Island at that time of the year?
sydney to cairnes sounds good im going in july,dont know weather to stay in hostels or get a campervan and do it proply? rwt limit you where you want to go
