Hi
For this type of route hopping from place to place, it usually works out cheapest (and if not cheapest, then certainly easiest) to buy a Round The World (RTW) ticket. Most big airline alliances have a version, where you can make your way in one direction around the planet, with a limited number (3-5) of stops per 'continent', and a limited total number of miles, and a total duration of up to 1 year. Your friend would just have to not take her final leg from the USA to Australia. (And New Zealand might have to be included as a separate trip, as the RTW tickets I know don't allow a first stop on the same 'continent' as where you live. The miles might be an issue too with the specific route you're outlining here, as you're zig-zagging above and below the equator quite a bit, which tends to cost a lot of miles.)
Be aware that you can't just work anywhere as the fancy takes you. You need to be in that country on a visa which allows working. The easiest countries for this for you would be most countries in Western Europe and Canada, which all have the concept of a Working Holiday Visa (WHV), which usually allows staying in the country for up to a year (sometimes longer) and working, once per lifetime for people under age 31. Do note that most backpacker jobs don't really earn a whole lot, so unless you have specific in-demand skills, think of working in a place as a way to stretch your money, so you can stay in a location for longer while saving money, rather than as a way to really earn enough to fund your next several months of travelling.
Thanks for the help Salander, I definitely will look into the RTW tickets because it will be a lot easier as you said... :D And yeah I looked into the job visas and that is going to take forever and cost more money so :S
Cheers H
Work visas take forever. Working Holiday Visas should be (relatively) hassle free (probably won't take more than 2 hours of filling in forms (either online or paper), nor more than two weeks of waiting after applying) and cheap ($100-$200).
