Hi, I am a 62 year old man and thinking of travelling worldwide for a few months by myself. My first thought is the concept of being by ones self i.e. not travelling in a group or with friends which is the thing that worries me the most. I am a reasonably outgoing person and could strike up conversations with anyone but have this feeling that I would arrive at a destination and not find people to meet etc. Also realising that a lot of "young" people will be travelling and I would not find anyone around my age to meet. Does anyone have any experience on the things that I am talking about or any thoughts on what I have said?
Well if you don't head too far off the beaten path there will probably be other people around to commiserate with . There are a lot of us Boomers out there wandering the Planet . I feel the important decision is that you are ready to hit the trail and it seems like you are open to meeting people . Those 2 facts are key . I've been on the road solo almost always - but not for long . New amigos are ready to meet and greet , and there's no better time than now .
Well, I know of what you speak. I'm 67 and travel solo too. I just came back from trip #4 to Indochina. All I can say is that part of the world is so very friendly that I have very few problems. Eating alone is probably the worst part of solo travel. In Vietnam, I have made several friends who really look out for my interests, and there I don't feel alone at all. Eating out in Indochina does not have the same stigma that it has in N. America - they let you sit wherever you want, and the service is usually wonderful. These days, there are so many others traveling (most are Europeans and Aussies) - I often forget just how shy I really am, and there's a sort of camaraderie that international travelers have. Just go, and you'll see what I mean. What I recommend is that you talk to the local people wherever you are - you can always communicate with sign language if you need to. The other hint I have is to stay in the smaller inexpensive hotels - you will find that there they really take special care with their guests (not at all like the cold chain hotels we use in the West). I can recommend one in particular - The Hanoi Art Hotel was just outstanding in this regard @ $45.
Whatever, it sure beats staying home!

If you are an adventurous person you could also consider staying over night in hostels. In my opinion hostels is the best place to meet new like minded people. I also travel solo most of the time and often go on trips with people I meet at hostels. Hostels are usually frequented by young people but believe me... there are many people from older generations who stay at hostels to.
