Day trips into Mexico

Utrecht has indicated that this thread is about Mexico

Hey Michael,

I did the hop over to Mexico some years ago (erm, 11 already...) from California. We just walked across. I don't really remember much about it, just walked across, looked around a bit and headed back. It really seems to have left no impression at all on my brain, so clearly what we did is not the best choice for you!

Let me ask my mates where we actually ended up going...

Sam

Mexico is such a treasure . The border towns don't offer a lot as far as real culture of Mexico .Good bargains on leather goods , etc . Don't drive across - it's not worth the hassle.

26000 people have been murdered in Mexico since 2006 . Last week 30 decapitated bodies were found apprximately 1 mile from the tourist area in Acapulco . I'm not really trying to dissuade travel , however the Country of friendly people and incredible scenery is now owned and controlled by the drug cartels . Until a few years ago I regularly travelled down to Nogales AZ for business . Nearby Patagonia is a treasure w/great camping - just be prepared for the Border Patrol to buzz you via chopper or traipse through the camp on an ATV .

Michael - Please listen to the wise words from heyyo01 - the border area is not a safe place at the present time. I love those border towns too, but I refuse to go near until this problem is no longer a problem. In addition to the border area, the news is full of reports of shootings in such remote locations as Acapulco and Veracruz as well.

(suggest you Google "mexican shootings")

Thanks guys.
I know about the Mexican problems and read a lot about it. It is in the news here regularly. I also read positive things about much better circumstances in Tijuana as well though and I wonder if tourists are targets of course.
Still, it's good to be very reluctant about it so I don't put myself into trouble. I did read a few smaller places near Yuma (very small town) which were nice to visit and Tercate or something like that.
As I said, not a must, but we'll see.
Cheers
Michael

Read about right here

Tijuana - home of some of the most accomplished pick pockets on this planet . They prey on the Sailors frm San Diego . A great party town with a well deserved reputation . Yuma is a dusty little place , you may find a more authentic Mexico in that area . On the US side along much of the Border know that you are under electronic surveillance . Makes for a fun vacay . Our defense dollars at work .
