Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia July/Aug 11

Hi, we are a family of 4 with an 18 year old boy, and 14 year old girl. My husband is lucky enough to have a sabbatical this Summer and we are looking at travelling to SE Asia. We've taken some advice re places to visit in Thailand as its the start of the rainy season. We are very interested in travelling in Vietnam, but a lot of the tours i've looked at for ideas show internal flights as a means of getting from South to North. We'd really like to avoid taking internal flights and actually see a bit more of the country, does anyone have any experience of travelling internally within Vietnam? Any recommendations on places to visit, and places to perhaps not visit if short of time would also be appreciated!

I too rec domestic air in Vietnam. VN is quite a long country with terribly dangerous roads and even more dangerous drivers! The trains are quite safe, but often less than clean and there is not a great deal to see from the track. I do recommend rail travel for shorter trips - overnight from Hanoi to Danang or Sapa can be done in a private carriage that is quite clean (Livitrans).

All I can tell you is that if I were a parent, I would not risk my kids' lives to some open tour bus driver that might be sleepy or drunk! Private cars w/driver (no self drive in VN) can be rented, but those roads are terrible (just coming in from the airport will shock you!)

I know what you mean by avoiding air travel - I use trains exclusively in Europe, myself!

Vietnam Airlines is the most dependable domestic carrier and quite good - book online at their site for best price.

My favorite locations are these: Hanoi, Sapa, Hoi An & Dalat
