Walking the Inca Trail unaided, advice on accommodation/food

normskian has indicated that this thread is about Inca Trail

The famous "classic inca trail" can only be walked with a guide. There's only 500 hikers allowed each day (including their guides and porters), and permits can only be applied for by registered Peruvian tour companies. There's checkpoints at the start, two points in the middle, and near the end.

There's various other hikes (partly overlapping with trails used by the incas) in the area, some of which can be walked unaided, but they won't pass by the same procession of increasingly awesome inca sites.
