What countries do you like to visit? Budget or just low cost?

if you are travelling around Europe Rome isn't on the way and a trip between Rome, Venice and Milano will take at least a week.

Italy has very good trains!
Rome - Milan is about 3 hrs, Rome - Venice also 3 hrs and Venice - Milan is about 2 hrs.
I suggest to fly into Milan or Rome (look for cheapest price) and from there take the train. You don't need a car anyway in the cities.
Perhaps Cinque Terra is an option too? look for Sestri Levante and take a look at my pics too.
Book your hostels ahead, especially in Rome and Cinque Terra.
Suggestion:
1. Manchester - Roma (when you fly Ryanair do NOT by bus tickets in the plane; just go outside the arrivals and take the city bus in stead of waiting for Ryanair bus with 200 people!)
2-4. Roma
5. Roma - Venice
6 Venice
7. Venice - Milano
8-9. Milano
10. Milano - Sestri Levante
11. Sestri Levante
12. Sestri Levante - Roma
13-14 Roma
