Scotland Hiking/Camping trip

Hey there,

How long are you planning on hiking for? Are you looking at long-distance hikes, or shorter hiking trips? For most longer hikes you can camp along the route as long as you make sure to leave no trace. Alternatively, there are campgrounds periodically and if you plan appropriately you can arrange your hike to stay in these for the most part. Note that it may mean a particularly long or short day at some point.

I'm not familiar with any shorter hikes or tour groups in the region, however, the most popular long hike (as far as I am aware) is the West Highland Way. I've yet to hike this particular route, but I'm sure you would be able to join some sort of tour or hiking group that follows it. I have, on the other, hiked the majority of the Great Glen Way and found the hike, while long, fairly easy. The paths were all very clearly marked (always a bonus!) and there was no real climbing or anything.

In any case, I found a book called Walking in Scotland by LP useful for both general and more specific route information for both longer and shorter hikes. The website http://walking.visitscotland.com/ also provides information about hiking trails in Scotland as well as many tour/walking groups that hike them. I'm sure you'll be able to find something that fits with your travel style.

Oh, and as an aside, make sure you bring good rain gear!

Good luck!
