How long are you staying for? And are you going to be working when you're there or just travelling?
£4000 is a decent amount to have behind you but you haven't said how long you're there for so it's hard to say if it'll be enough. I would work on £1000 a month as a starting point for your cost of living and then add onto that the cost of any tours/activities/flights/travelling you plan on doing.
But obviously the cost varies from person to person. I was in Hawaii a few years ago and me and my mate went round the supermarket and I had a full basket which came to under $10, whereas his cost twice as much and he had half as much stuff. Some people just seem to be better with money than others so factor that into your budget as well, i.e. you will know how good you are with money. But the fact that you've saved £4000 suggests that you're probably okay at budgeting.

I'm planning on going out to Aus late Sept, starting off in Cairns and working down east coast - I'll be heading to Brisbane to see friends but I'm essentially going alone too! Bit scary but an adventure too!
As Emmett70 said £4000 is a good amount but depends how long you're going for - are you on a working holiday visa for a year or just a 3 month visa? Where are you flying from out of interest?
Tax file and bank accounts can all be done out there. From what I've been told from friends you can just walk into a bank and say you'd like to open an account with them - they'll be used to having travellers come and ask I imagine! It might do to research into hidden costs of the bank though (e.g. charges for withdrawls at ATMs). You can get a tax file number when (and if) you start working so you don't get taxed ridiculous amounts. Sim cards are a similar thing - I think you can get your phone unlocked and it should work but it's probably just easier to buy one out there - it's what I plan on doing, just a cheap phone so if it breaks or I lose it or something it won't be hundreds of £££ gone!
A lot of things you can buy out there so it's probably best to travel light to begin with and just collect things as and when you need them. I've had friends say don't bother bringing suncream as big tubs over there are so cheap because it's a basic neccessity!

Yes im planning on working as i travel my flights 6months but can be changed for small fee if i run out of money or want to stay longer was just wanting 4000 as more of a start up n work as i travel i have a years working visa.
Im not too bad at budgeting and can cook cheaply so hopefully make my money last longer,
I was looking n does mention some places about the charges ATMs etc shall try looking into that a bit more. Im flying from london and get to brisbane early morning and have booked a week stay in a hostel but after that I have nothing planned thought just see where it takes me after there.

hi all my names billy 21 male,im leaving from heathrow and flying to bankok to travel thailand for a month then leaving around the 22nd june and flying to cairnes australia for a year or mayby more? im going to travel down the east coast staying in hostels but i was thinking of getting a campervan ill decide when im out there.probly going to get a phone with a dual simcard so i can use one over in oz cheap. if anybodys got any tips or advise on whats a must take or whats best to leave behind that would be great,or if anybodys got similar plans and is up for a once in a lifetime adventure then write back.im really chilled out and easy to get along with so no probs with conversations

im flying from heathrow to cairns june 30th, flying by myself but meeting up with some
friends a few days later so i'll be in cairns by myself.
You got any idea what hostel ur going to be staying in!! i know theirs loads of people that go out by themselves but still dont fancy the idea of it.
Got a year wh visa so hopefuly be out their for the whole year. Cant wait to have some proper fun, still have 3 months of waiting and its killing me, soooo excited!!

Also Rosina, some tips for places to go:
On the East Coast Fraser Island and the Whitsunday Islands are excellent but wait until you get to Australia before booking any tours cos a lot of hostels do deals where if you book a trip through them they give you a free night's accommodation (only for expensive trips). If you go to Fraser Island then the cheapest option is a self-drive tour where they put you in a 4WD with about nine other people and you just drive about. However, I've heard of some companies conning people over the deposit (you have to pay about $1000 between you) by saying the van has got an extra dint or scratch and then making you pay for it out of the deposit. So I reckon it's worth paying slightly extra to do a tour where you get a guide/driver. It's basically the same except the guide drives you everywhere and you know you won't get ripped off on your deposit.
Philip Island near Melbourne is an excellent day trip. You get to watch the Penguin Parade which is where you stand at viewing points on the beach and watch as loads of penguins come out of the sea and waddle up to the cliffs and then up to their burrows. With the company I went with you also got to see koalas and feed some wild parrots on the way.
Ayres Rock, The Olgas and King's Canyon are amazing, but out of the way obviously, so it depends on your budget whether you think it's worth the trek to Alice Springs to do a tour to see them all.
The Great Barrier Reef is amazing obviously. I did a day trip from Cairns and I basically booked the cheapest tour, but I sort of regret it as the boat I was on was quite slow, so if I'd paid an extra $10-$20 I could have had more time at the actual reef itself rather than just sitting on the boat waiting to get there. But even with the cheapest tour we still had a few hours at the reef and it was totally amazing.
Also, one other tip is that even if you open up an Australian account I would still take a back-up card with you in case you have bank troubles or in case your main card gets eaten by a cash machine or whatever. And also so you can withdrawal money for the first few days while you're waiting for your Oz bank account to be processed.
Prepaid travel cards generally offer better deals nowadays than English banks. The best rate offered by an English bank for overseas withdrawals is Nationwide which charge £1 plus 2% per withdrawal which isn't that great. But with a prepaid travel card you can get some that charge less than that. I got a FairFx card which charges £1 plus 1.4%, but speaking to other people you can get better deals than that.

I been looking at those cash passports there free to have and use apart from usual charges of aus atms and what not, so thinking of taking my money on one of them (you can get a back up one too) then transfer to the aus bank account.
I like the sounds of the penguin parade and heard about the Whitsunday Islands when abouts would you recommend on going? I've been told its good to go on the Queens birthday
I'd like to go to Alice springs think i'll decide that more on when i get there, see if meet anyone else travelling in surrounding areas.
