Driving San Francisco to Las Vegas

Hi All,

Hire cars are normally not allowed to be driven out of state (as in California to Nevada). It's only a short hop by plane and you can pick up a car at the airport.

Check with your rental company. If you are returning the vehicle to SF, I think that is allowed. If it is a one way rental, check what the drop off charges will be. They can be substantial.

I can think of 3 routes off-hand. 1. Across the Sierra's to Reno. A day there then down to LV. 2. Hug the coastline, Monterey, Hearst Castle, Morro Bay, cut across to visit Death Valley or all the way to LA, then over to LV. 3. Hit the National parks. Yosemite, Sequoia, Death valley.

Good luck with your planning.

Not allowed to be driven out of state? Where did you hear that? The opposite is the case. Almost always is it allowed! Even for a short rental period.

and spend time in Santa Cruz, then Monterey, then the wineries near Paso Robles, then at Moonstone Beach in Cambria, then in Santa Barbara, and then on to Las Vegas. Doing this will take you to all the livliest places except for those in LA.

If you plan to also go to Los Angeles, then I suggest you go either to Westwood (near UCLA) or south to Huntington Beach or Newport Beach. Those are the "happening" places in the LA area.
