Vientiane to Bangkok

Hey all,

You do have to cross the Friendship bridge and go through immigration to get into Thailand before you can get the train. However, I'm not sure there is an overnight train going in the Nong Khai - Bangkok direction. I know there is in the other direction (Bangkok-Nong Khai). Usually if you want a sleeper you should book it ahead of time, but if not I don't think you'll have a huge problem so long as you aren't traveling on a holiday.

You'll probably be able the ticket in Laos, but you can expect to pay a small premium for it. Personally i'd book it on the Thai side and probably try to do it myself.

Hey Doc,

Yeah there is a few trains: 76, 70, 134. Departing Nong Khai at 6:00am, 18:20, 19:05

I think the 70 will be the most comfortable of the 3. Unfortunately for this part of the trip I have to be organized as I'm meeting friends in Bangkok on the day of my arrival to the city.

I might book in advance just to be safe!!

Any recommendations on travel time from Vientiane, to Nong Khai (including border crossing)?

Glad to hear you could find out about the trains.

The border crossing time really, really depends. I've crossed in 5 minutes, I've crossed in 2 hours - it really depends on what the traffic there is like. A couple of tour buses full of backpackers can slow the crossing down to a crawl.

I'd plan on 2 hours to be safe and if you get lucky enough to get through quick take an hour to go to Salakeawkoo which is an amazing sculpture garden on the Nong Khai side (in fact I'd recommend it in any case).

How do i go about catching the overnight train from Vientiane to Bangkok?

It's all explained over on
