Hi, I'm a 17 year old girl form the UK and have this year applied to university and recieved offers from all five. Whilst there is no doubt in my mind that I'll be firming Oxford uni, I'm torn between Sheffield and Manchester as an insurance choice. Which do you think is better for a student who's studying biosciences but is very much into independant music, art, theatre, cinema (inc. foreign cinema) and fashion? Is it overwhelming living in Manchester? and what have been your experiences of the two cities?
I studied in Sheffield, and I have to say I loved and absolutely still do love the city. Even now more than a decade after graduating I go back there.
I'm biased because I'm Manchester born and bred, but I really do think it's a great city to be a student in. There's so much going on in terms of nightlife, shopping, and restaurants, and as you say you're into independent music and cinema I can't think of anywhere better. There's an independent cinema called the Cornerhouse not far from the university which shows foreign and non - mainstream films and there are shows at the theatres and the arena all the time. There are music gigs all the time in the city and the art gallery is excellent.
That's not to say Sheffield isn't good - I have a couple of friends who went there and loved it.
