Hey me and my gf have planned and booked our holiday round America but have a couple of gaps to fill. We are driving the whole way and are wondering if anyone knows of nice places we could check out on our drive from Chicago to new York? Also from Washington dc to Florida?
Chicago to NYC - I would cross into Ontario, Canada at Detroit/Windsor and see Toronto and Niagara Falls before crossing back to New York State.
DC to Florida - A great deal to see in Virginia (Colonial Williamsburg and several Civil War sites) - VA is very rich in US history. Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Savannah are great places to stop along the way too.
I lived in Virginia for about a year and there is a LOT to see there.
Check out Virginia Beach on your way down, it's always fun! Fredericksburg is really quiet but if you are into your civil war history it's chock full of it. Like Daawgon said, on your way through South Carolina I'd head to Myrtle beach too.
As well as the obvious to see and do in Washington, leave some time to visit Georgetown, Alexandria and the downtown neighborhood Adams Morgan.
On your way south, personally I'd leave Myrtle Beach, which to me is just another tourist town gone bad and one step away from the experience of going on a cruise. Instead stay on I-95 and then head into Charleston, then take the coast road down to Beaufort SC, a beautiful, much less touristy, historic town, that has hosted many famous movies such as Prince of Tides, Forest Gump, and The Big Chill.
From Beaufort, it's just stones throw, down Spanish moss draped ancient oaks, to Savannah. There are a number of pretty, and historic villages on the way down the coast road, that takes you all the way into Florida.
When you are in Savannah, or elsewhere in Georgia, try their pecan pie and ribs. Awesome.
