Landing in Kuala Lumpur July 2012 - north or south first??

Hi everyone

That's a fairly good price for NZ to KL to UK. I've been thinking of visiting NZ early next year but so expensive.

I would go to Penang Island. Quite laid back unlike KL, with some nice beaches.

I had a look on hostelbookers and some very cheap rooms there. If you go south to Singapore, it's very expensive to stay there.

See the war museum, butterfly farm, museum and art gallery, etc and have some nice "ais karim" (ice cream).

If you go to Thailand from there, take a cheapo flight (Air Asia) to Bangkok so you get 30 days visa free. It's only 15 days if you go overland.

Thanks Cyberia

NZ is quite expensive, especially if you want to participate in lots of activities. We have been picking apples and now kiwi fruit to save some money and are hoping to spend 2-3 weeks exploring the south island before leaving NZ.

Looks like we could get a flight from about £240 each from Bangkok to the UK, so yes the price from NZ via SEA back to the UK is a good deal. At least if we run out of money we've always got a flight home!

We'd like if possible to avoid the worst of the rainy season. Would be nice to have good weather...we seem to have hit lots of places in winter so far. We were thinking of Bali and / or Borneo.

Thanks for the info re a flight into Bangkok.

Cheers
Debs

Hi!
As to Thailand, it seems that wheather depends more about east or west coast than north/ south. Malaisian part on Borneo is for nature lovers :-) Mountain trekking, rainforest trips, caves etc. If there, it is worth to visit Phroboscis monkey sanctuary- I liked it the most in Malaisian part of the island (didn´t go diving, it is definitely good also). Bali seems a bit more relax-enjoy. In Borneo, Kota Kinabalu center, normal hotel is about 37 EUR. It can be found better price, but the very low price means bugs in room :-( Thai massage in Thai was 200-300 THB (7 EUR). You could eat really cheap if choosing places for locals. Have a nice vacation !

Hey Debs, You mention a flight for 240GBP from Bangkok to the UK... Who's that flying with? (As I'm in a similar boat to you guys, flying from Christchurch to KL next week)
Good luck living on your budget!

Hi

Thanks for all the advice and tips so far.

Rory_7 I found a flight with qantas online (with the following disclaimer - After you have completed your booking you will need to visit our office below within two working days for credit card and signature verification. Your ticket will be issued once your credit card has been sighted.) - for 17880 bhat or £340 for 16 March 2013. I did find it with another company but can't remember who as I've searched so many over the past few days.

Good luck with your trip and let us know how you find it there.

Cheers
Debs

Debs. NZ is increasingly expensive with the strong dollar there. It was two and a half to the pound when I was last there and now it's two. I have been looking at flying there from Thailand in January but with the expensive flight and expensive car hire, I think it will be too costly for just a few weeks.
