Hi guys and girls.
You can use a train all the way to Singapore from Bangkok. Seat 61 has info on this. But transportation in Thailand is pretty good. The train service will not take you everywhere if beaches are in your sights but close enough to make connections. Hua Hin beach area is along the way to Southern Thailand.
You can also take the train to Chiang Mai too. Overnight sleeper cars are popular. Lots of things to see in Northern Thailand but no beaches. Near Bangkok is a cheap beach area called Pattaya. Crappy beach but hotels have pools. Lots of nightlife, cheap hotels and cheap transportation.
Google up "things to see and do in Thailand" and "things to see and do" for particular cities and you will get many suggestions. If you ever need hotel advice (recommended) also say how much per night you want to spend on your room.
Were you thinking about buying a one way flight to Bangkok and a one way flight home from Singapore? If so, and you are coming from a long distance, compare the cost of 2 one way flights vs a round trip just to Bangkok. One way flights are expensive. Flying from Singapore to Bangkok again may work out cheaper than 2 one way flights. Also, some airlines may not let you board with out proof of onward travel.
When you arrive in Thailand affects hotel prices. Where you are from and the passport you enter with determines if you need a visa. Usually if you can enter Thailand and get the free Visa Exemption stamp you shouldn't have a problem with Malaysia and Singapore but check for sure.
I would spend a few weeks in Thailand. Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the beaches, then get a short flight down to Singapore.
I did the train journey twice before and it's a lot of hassle.
Cheers guys for the replys.
karazyal, we are going to australia afterwords with a year visa. But thanks for the suggestion.
We are from the UK, and really just staying for 2 weeks, so do you think we will be charged much at hotels. We will try and get the visa exemptio stamp.
Thanks mate

With a UK passport you automatically get the free 30 day visa exemption stamp in your passport when you fly in. When you leave Thailand it ends. Enter again overland only 15 days. Fly in again another free 30 days.
When you need hotel advice for any forum always include how much you want to spend per night. Don't use words like cheap, economy, bargain prices, etc. Use a baht, UK pound or US dollar amount. Someone will come up with a suggestion. Match the hotel to how much you can afford. Thailand is affordable, for me cheaper than the UK!
