Went into a store. Tried about a dozen on (weighed down so I'd get a real feel for how they'd fit on my back; good stores have materials available for this). Walked back and forth. There was one which fit the shape of my shoulders and back much better than the others, which I could walk around with very comfortable. That's the one I bought. (After repeating the procedure at another store, and then a week later again at the first store, just to make certain that I'd keep picking the same pack.)
Beyond that, I knew I wanted a travel pack rather than a top-loader, as I would mostly travel in urban areas and not go on multi-day hiking trips with this backpack, and a travel pack is then much easier to getting to your stuff. I also paid attention to water-resistant fabric and heavy duty zippers (which now, 10 years later, are still doing just fine).
The backpack I got was a MacPac, which is a high quality brand. But many brands are good, and with the cheap brands, you can just see that the materials are subpar. So I wouldn't pay too much attention to the brand per se.

Where ever you are travelling as a backpacker, my tips for would be in following points:
- Lighten your load
- Keep in touch with your family or friends
- Travel insurance is very important
- Plan gradually
We bought MacPac Orient Express travel packs (65L) four years ago (GBP95). They have different sized harnesses for short/medium/tall male/female. They are brilliant for long trips when you don't know if you can get washing done although the detachable day-packs are a little small.
We're just back from a two-week tour of Sri Lanka for which we travelled light with 40L locally made packs (GBP30) which we could carry onto the airplane. We could do washing every three or four days so a bigger pack wasn't necessary. These were perfect for the really cramped local buses in Sri Lanka.
I suggest you decide exactly what you're going to pack and then try to reduce it. Then add a few items for purchases on your way and then try to buy a comfortable pack that's just large enough for what you're carrying. If you are in a shop and intend to buy one, ask if you can bring it back for a refund the next day if it doesn't hold your stuff.
