Travelling to Sydney from October 2013

Hey, looking for a bit of advice about a couple of things. I've booked my flights to Sydney, arriving at the beginning of October, with plans to stay in Aus for a year I think. Further than my flights though I have nothing set and would like a basic plan of where I'm heading.

Is October/November a good time to travel the East Coast?

As long as you head south, yes. November will gradually be getting humid and oppressive, ahead of the wet season (which lasts from December through March, for Brisbane and further north). So your idea about "better weather" "after new year" is very much not true. January is generally the most unpleasant time of the year to be in Australia, with heat waves in the south (many 40+ degree days), and frequent flooding in the northeast (due to that wet season).

If you want to be back in Sydney for NYE, book accommodation as soon as possible; most anywhere decent will long since have gone.
