You can go to your nearby travel agency, even more than one, and ask them to give you information on plane tickets, various airlines that fly from your city and even book hotels too. There is no obligation for this, usually no charge too.
First you work up a budget and see how much money you have after paying for your plane tickets. You need a passport. Then you decide when to go. Sources of what to see and do can be travel guides that you buy or borrow. Know how much per day you can afford for hotel rooms. Usually a hotel is your biggest daily expense. In Thailand you can use travelers checks, debit cards and cash for changing to Thai baht. You get a better rate of exchange if you change your money over to Thai baht in Thailand.
Buying round trip will probably be cheaper than 2 one way flights. If you stay in Thailand less than 30 days (UK passport) you can get a free Visa Exemption stamp in your passport at the airport when you fly in. Longer than 30 days you need a tourist visa. Most flights to Thailand land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) airport. Further away from New Years Holidays the hotels will be cheaper. Tourists visit Thailand every month of the year but more tourists show up from November to February when weather is a little better.
A visit to Bangkok, visit a beach area and a visit to Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai area is popular) is a typical holiday to Thailand for first timers. A final night or two in Bangkok allows you to shop for the big things too heavy to carry all over the place and you will be able to use the Airport Rail Link or meter taxi to the airport. Bangkok has 2 airports. Some discount flights depart from Don Muang on the other side of the city. Thailand has cheap bus service connecting top to bottom and sideways. Rail service also available from top to bottom. Discount airlines also available.
Passport, work up a budget, buy or borrow travel guide, visit local travel agencies and even simple Google searches can help you on the things to see and do in Thailand. Some hotels have tour desks that set you up with a tour on short notice. Local travel agencies also book tours. Pick one out and pay up. Pick up at your hotel and return there at the end of the ride. (When you are out and away from your hotel for several hours have a roll of TP in your walk around bag. Not all toilets have TP. Also some hand wet wipes in your bag may come in handy too!)

Many tourists book their own flights via the internet. Then they book their own hotel rooms. Some have a few addresses for hotels and get a room with a walk-in. Some tourists when in Thailand call the next hotel or email them for a reservation. For the first day or two at least have a room booked so you can direct the taxi or walk from rail service to. Look over old posts for other advice. Read up on scams in Thailand and Bangkok in particular. (City rail service only from 0600 to midnight.)

Most of the things are covered by Krazyal.
A couple of things to be kept in mind -
1 - Plan your Trip in terms of How much Finance you have and how much you would be willing to spend out of that on living per day/ food & Drinks and Sightseeing.
2 - Finalize your date asap, so that you can book Air tickets Cheap. As you know crude oil prices are soaring like anything.
3 - Ensure that your trip is covering the maximum places with the minimum effort, Say suppose if you want to stay in Thailand and you arrive at BKK, move on to the same day to Koh Samui, Phuket, Krabi etc. and once you have completed the trip return to BKK and go to pattaya through Road. Return from Krabi stay in BKK and then you can head away for your hometown.
4 - Google out the places which you want to explore and activities which are on your list like snorkeling, diving etc. and keep some amount separate for this.
5 - Most of the foreigners plan out for Full Moon Party, see if its in your list and you would like to go and attend.
I have been to Thailand a couple of times and it was always a fun trip for me and I always felt that its a safe place for both males and females.

You will love it if..... you keep away from the traditional holiday destinations.... Phuket etc.
Bangkok is fantastic and can be done on the cheap right up to extortionate prices.
I went for the first time last year.. a bit daunting at first i must admit but if you take care and plan it is an amazing place and soooo cheap.
Train services are really good and you meet many travellers in a similar position. if you go over night on the train the buffet cars become a travellers party on wheels! Great fun.

There are many travel agencies at the main stations and the locals are more than happy to book train tickets, connections, accomodation etc.
I tried diving out there and can recommend some on Koh Tao with good accomodation thrown in. Also live aboard trips out of Khaolak are fantastic.
Friends went to Chang mai and thought it over rated. Koh Samui also spoilt as are many well known resorts now. Phuket.... just look at the local news out there... steer clear.
However the islands between Phuket and Krabi where a nice find. Stayed on Kho Yao Noi with people i met out there. very chilled and some great food served up in small kitchens on the beach.... 2 courses of very fresh seafood with soft drinks.... £7!!
I loved Koh lipe - stay away from town and walk in of an evening. It is getting busy but still idylic.
Treated myself to 2 nights in the Labua in Bangkok before flying home.... wow! Worth every penny!!
Plan your trip from train times, flights to accomodation. many site forums offer experienced traveller advice on good accomodation and food.
Can be done on a very low budget. It was great fun... another 4 weeks in january i hope.
Eva air where comfortable and staff where great. London to BKK is around £650 - 700 min.

Hi have just returned from chiang mai, koh samui, bangkok. Chiang mai yes overrated but lots of activity based trips to do from there such as trekking, rafting, yoga and mountain climbing and the "real thailand" so worth going to. Also from there you can travel to chiang rai, pai etc.
Koh Samui is very resorty n expensive, but is great to move to koh tao and koh pan nang which are more for travellers. Equally from phuket you can get to krabi etc and is much cheaper to fly to from bkk.
One big tip- book internal transfers, buses, trips, tours etc once you get there, all cities are littered with travel agents on every street who will do everything for you and half the price of interenet costs, haggle with EVERYONE.
