Hi all,
Bangkok is a travel hub so easy to get flights to the rest of Asia. Some information:
http://www.travelfish.org/
Really you don't need more than ideas. Get to maybe KSR in Bangkok and talk to some travel agents there or even some backpackers, of which there are so many, and they will tell you where to go and what to see. Visas if necessary can be arranged too. And when you are finished with one destination, a bus, train or plane to the next. You'll be travelling well trodden routes with many other travellers from Britain and elsewhere.
Just book some days accommodation in Bangkok so you can get sorted out.
All you need is sufficient money. Thailand and much of Asia is cheap, though travel itself can be quite expensive.
I usually think of the beginning of December as the best time to go, and month by month it gets hotter. Very little rain though.
Hi there,
I recommend for you travel in Viet Nam:
From south to north, Vietnam is one of the most romantic and naturally beautiful destinations in the world. I recommend you an itinerary as suggestion:
2 days in Hanoi : visit Old quarter – a traditional & cultured place
2 days in Sapa: trekking, stay overnight in minority villages
2 days in Mai Chau
2 days in Halong Bay: kayaking, discover thousands of limestones karsts, isles and caves
2 days in Hue: with the old city and the Citadel on the north side and the newer city, including most hotels and restaurants, on the south side
1 days in Hoi An: once known as Faifo, with more than 2,000 years history
1 days in Da Nang. From here, you can discover Ho Chi Minh Trails & central Highlands (include DaLat) by motorbike with 10 days or more
2 days in Nha Trang: Vietnam’s most famous seaside resort-town. It's also the scuba diving center of Vietnam.
2 days in Saigon: city & Cu Chi tunnels
1 day in Mekong Delta: a maze of small canals, rivers and arroyos interspersed with villages and floating markets.
As Cyberia says in #2, kick-off your travels in Bangkok, staying in the Khao San area.
You'll meet 100s of like-minded people, and pick-up an endless amount of tips and travel advice.
Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam are all easy to get around by public transport. I prefer trains in Thailand as they incredibly cheap, and great fun.
Try and avoid flying anywhere as all the 'action' is at ground level, and you'll see and experience some wonderful sights.
Don't rush things, and keep your sense of humour.
December and January is the peak holiday season in SE Asia, so it'll be v.busy.
Our favourite airline [and good vfm] to get to/from Bangkok is Oman Airlines. They fly daily (?) from Heathrow, and you'll change flights in Muscat, with only an hour or so stop stopover.

Looks good.
How did you travel around?
Any accommodation recommendations?
I literally have no plans and don't know where to start! I wouldn't even know how long to go for, maybe half a year or less? I'm thinking Thailand, but going all that way and for a few months then it makes sense to go on to some other places too in Asia?
If you can stay in Asia for a half year or not depends on your finances. You can't work legally in most countries without a proper work permit. Some women do have under the table jobs but maybe not a good idea to do what they do to survive. So this means the money you bring with you or have available through ATM withdrawals from hometown banks is what you live on. If you intended to find a job it won't be easy or it may be something illegal.
From the UK, round trip to Bangkok should be cheaper than two one way flights. In this part of Asia you can easily visit other countries, often by a simple bus or train. Even flying is not expensive between countries near Thailand so getting back to Thailand is not expensive. My advice is to visit Thailand and nearby countries when you have enough money saved up. Not all of the countries in Asia are cheap. Singapore, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan are not cheap.
You can not show up and stay in various countries as long as you want. There are rules to follow. Different countries means different visa requirements. Do some research on visa requirements. Some visas you must pay for. A simple travel guide you can buy or get from libraries will give you some information on what to see and do. Even a Google search will give you help for getting from one place to another.
Run a budget and see how much you have available each day after buying your plane tickets. Yes, weather is a little better around November - February but plane tickets may cost more, especially near Christmas, hotels cost more and with fewer vacancies. Many tourists do travel during the off season, you do get a little more rain or more heat but hotels are cheaper too. Millions of tourists prefer the off season to save money and have fewer tourists around. Even if it rains most of the time the rain does not last too long.
Know how much you have available after paying for plane tickets. (Pull up your favorite airline and see what they charge for flying to Bangkok. Run the prices for one way vs round trip while you are at it.) Even staying in crappy cheap hotels and hostels can be a little tiring after a while. Once you leave Bangkok there are not a lot of hostels available in Thailand. There are cheap guest houses available though.
You do have to consider safety when you travel. You don't want to take chances with risky adventures or situations. Not enough money to live safely with reasonable comfort and hygiene don't stay for such a long time! Stay for less time and have more money to spend each day. You can always return again at another time. I think you should just visit for 2 months. Then you can divide your available money by 60 days for a daily budget. (We don't know your income, you could be quite wealthy with lots of money available and staying 6 months wouldn't be a problem.)

Hi,
This might be helpful for knowing the entry requirements of various countries
& Pompey Pete suggests you use Oman airways with a changeover in Oman.
If you take that route & time & money are adequate, I suggest you spend a couple of days in Oman. I found it delightful & I always like to take advantage of the fact I am in a country to see at least a little bit of it. No telling if I will ever get back there. It's also a nice way for me to break a long journey up a bit. There might be no added cost to the flight for the stopover but check that.
Happy travels
Steve
