How to create a home base for our travels in Europe

Hi - My family will be living in Germany for 4 months, and we will be travelling extensively throughout Europe during our stay. I would like to seperate day trips from overnight trips. While my husband is working, I will be taking our children on day trips close to where we will be living in Germany. It would be helpful if I could drop a pin on the location where we will be living, so that I can easily see how long it will take us to get to our day trips.

Sorry, don't understand what you're asking so can't help, but remember that depending on where you're living and what type of transport is available and what time of year that what constitutes a day trip will vary wildly, especially with children...

Good luck and have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

Sorry - let me be more specific. We will be living in Germany (Dudeldorf, to be exact) I would like to mark this location as our home base AND I would like to plan day trips (ones in which we will return to Dudeldorf at night) as well as overnight trips (ones farther from home base that require overnight stay) Is it possible to use the Map to define a home base?

Thanks for the explanation, I understand now. Hopefully someone familiar with the map function here will answer your question.

That said, a point marked on a map will not absolutely define what will and won't be a day trip because it's not just a simple matter of distance...

Cheers,
Terry

Hi,

I don't see how you can get that with the maps on this site.

Google maps might help.

go to Dussledorff say
then click - directions

then click on the map & right click
Choose 'to here'

On the left you see suggested directions with times etc. by car, foot & public transport.

Hover over a set of directions & the suggested route changes.

Maybe you can save that if you are a member - not sure about that as I am not.

but - now you can GRAB point B & move it some where else or add a destination or do another one.

Or GRAB any point on the line and move it

Saving each time,

Or you can type in the place for point A B C & on & on, back to where you started.

Maybe it will be what you need.

I would like to see a map with concentric distance circles around a center, but have not found one yet. Try searching for 'maps with concentric distance circle & see what pops up'

Amazing! I just did exactly that. Googled 'maps with concentric distance circles' and sggestion at the top of the page for exactly that. I clicked it & got a map where you click on ay two points and the circles appear.

Magic.

TP don't like links so I haven't put them in, but this should get you started anyway.

TP don't like links so I haven't put them in, but this should get you started anyway.

FWIW, our harsh stance against links is mostly there for newly registered members, since experience has shown that in the vast majority of cases, their only purpose for registering is to drop that link. You on the other hand have been participating long enough that we would no longer suspect you for dropping the link for promotional purposes; you're clearly being helpful with answering another member's question - and so the link would be absolutely fine.

If you go into the Planner view, create a new trip with your home, then add a stop with the place you want to travel to on your day trip. You'll see a " Search transport options " link between the two stops . Clicking on that will show you the time it will take to travel between the two locations.

If you don't want all the extra mapping / planning features , you can also go directly to . We use their data to find the transport options. It's quite comprehensive and should work well for Germany.

Unfortunately we don't have anything like a "home" pin for our maps yet. It has been discussed though and your potential use of it is interesting.

Thanks! Finally...a helpful hint!

Well, you might not have got anything out of it but I already had this which is great for directions.

And I found this which will come in handy for me.

So - Cheers
