First time travelling advice NZ

Hello all!

I plan to keep moving on my travels to see as much of New Zealand as possible, but does anyone recommend anywhere in particular? Anything I simply must see or do?

Bit short on time right now, but I tend to write up my personal list of favorite sights semi-regularly. With questions like these, though, it helps if you give some indication about what it is you enjoy, as that might spark tailor-made advice, rather than generic highlights. My advice in that other thread was focussing on nature/hiking.

Then I have the problem of backpack or one of those rolling suitcases?

Backpack all the way as far as I'm concerned. You're just so much more mobile with them, and bus stations aren't always near where you want to stay. (Get a travel pack rather than top-loading backpack for easy access to your things.) That said, it's probably totally doable with rolling suitcase.

Excellent advice! I want to spend my time outdoors as much as possible so your list suits me perfect. Hiking, camping, and maybe a gentle introduction to more extreme sports. Any natural land formations are also right up my street so thank you for that!

And perfect, I'll start looking at backpack prices.

Hiking / Camping - You definitely want to take a trip to the bottom of the South Island. It has the most beautiful scenery, really wild and rugged. Try Queenstown and maybe Milford or Doubtful Sound. There are some really cool hikes around the Fiordland area - try the Humpridge or Kepler tracks - they are probably the most well known. Queenstown is a transient population - about half tourists - so it's probably the best chance of you finding a job as there are a lot of bars/restaurants. I would recommend a decent hiking pack, rather than wheeling suitcase. Welcome to NZ!!!

A hike over the Tongariro (or better known the Mount Ruhapehu) in the North Island will be very exhausting but something of a life time! After all you hike on an active volcano! Additionally It is very different from the hikes on the South Island, so you could very well do both and not be bored...

Other things I would definitly recommend: Black water rafting in the waitomo caves and snorceling/diving on poor knights island!

I wish you a great trip!

Thank you so very much guys, that has hugely bulked out my trip! 7

When you guys are are hiking, do you leave your backpack at a hostel and carry only essentials or are you carrying the whole lot?
