Hostel - Dorm vs Double Room - Australia

My partner and I are flying to Cairns in October to start a year in Aus on a WHV, and we're struggling to decide on whether we should book a more private double room for the first few nights there or if we should just jump straight in and book some beds in a 8 or 10 bed dorm? We're both planning on getting jobs over there but not until we've had a bit of a holiday and had some fun first so we definitely want to get into the backpacker-party-spirit but is it going to be too much too soon on the first night? What is everybody else's experiences? We were looking at Gilligans as it looks the most fun but they only have dorm rooms available now so if we want to stay there it looks like we're going to have to bite the bullet and party through the jet lag! Any advice?

I would personally choose a double room because it's more intimate. If you choose a dorm, you can never know whom you'll be staying with and you may not like the persons staying in the same room with you. Not to mention that you will have to be very careful with your money and valuables. If you want to meet new people, you can always do that in the local bars or parties.

I would book a double room, at least for your first few nights. Apart from anything else, you'll be exhausted and jet-lagged so a double room will give you more chance of getting some decent sleep. You'll still meet other backpackers in the communal areas of the hostel, so should still be able to party if you want to. On your first night though, you'll do well to want to do anything other than sleep!

I wouldn't recommend Gilligans, when I was in Cairns I met a few people there and none of them liked it.

However we stayed in Travellers Oasis in Cairns and it was really nice, one of my favourite hostels in Oz.

Ditto Bex. The sooner you're over the jet lag, the better.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

Thanks guys! I think we're going to take the advice n book into somewhere with private rooms for the first 3 nights while we get our bearings. I'm disappointed to hear about Gilligans not being recommended but thanks for the heads up! I'll check out the travellers Oasis place.

Thanks guys!
