Your question is too general for anyone to comment on constructively.
Start by deciding, 1.) How much money you will have saved. Then you can, 2.) Decide on which destinations are possible within your budget for a year long trip.
Those two issues are the most important initial factors so you can start laying out a common sense and doable travel plan.

Thanks for the reply! In all honesty I'm so new to this that I don't even know what a good amount to have saved is. We both have about $20000 saved right now but are planning to take this trip in a year or so, so more saving is possible.
We would love to go for a year.
So I guess a better place to start is how much did people save in order to survive a year abroad

That's a question with wildly varying answers.
You can live like a king for a month at some destinations in the Indian Subcontinent/SE Asia/Central & South America for the same money that you'll blow in a week travelling frugally in Australia or parts of Europe.

If it doesn't give you a vague idea as to what to expect, it may at least help you rule out some cities that don't meet your preferences.

How about this for a starting point:
Europe - April May June July August
Japan/China - September october
Thailand/SEA - November December January
Australia - February March
So basically across the northern temperate zone in its summer, Australia also in its summer, and Southeast Asia at what's broadly speaking the mildest time of year and avoiding monsoon season for many places. It's all a compromise though - eg that's a great time of year for nz and parts of Aus but elsewhere may be too hot.
Where's home? And are you bothered what time of year you begin?
Best time for peru I think is the driest time, june July August. Which doesn't fit the rest of the timetable well.

i have never embarked on a year-long travel but i would like to prepare for one.
whenever i travel, i research extensively - look for decent places to stay (affordable, safe and clean hotels or hostels), restaurants and local eateries that wont cause any food poisoning, islands and beaches and how to reach them.
once i have done my research and listed the places on where i could possibly stay and eat - i check reviews. trip advisor helps, of course you have to weigh if people are bashing and authentic travelers giving positive feedback.
then SAVE. save as much money as you can, have back ups in cases of emergencies when on the road.
