Security for single female traveller in Zanzibar

Planning my trip to Tanzania including Zanzibar I wonder how secure and comfortable a single travelling woman feel on the beach in Zanzibar? Suggestions of nice beaches are also appreciated.
Lots of thanks!

Hello Sigge

When I was in Kenya I never saw any women wearing bathing suits.
In fact people seemed to be prudish about clothes in general. One Kenyan woman in a village escorted me to the market to buy a petticoat because my dress was not modest enough even though it went several inches below my knees.
I dont remember any men wearing bathing suits either.
The Kenyans dont seem to bother with swimming.

However, since Zanzibar is a popular tourist destination things may be different there.
I think if u see other foreign women on the beach in bathing suits it should be safe enough. If nobody is wearing bathing suits I think it would be safer if u do not either.

Hi Sigie, I am from East Africa.
it is safe and secure for a woman travelling alone in Zanzibar. However, please show respect for local laws and customs, and the sensitivities of your host country. Remember many people, for religious reasons, (zanzibar is predominantly islamic) consider scanty dress a discourtesy. Please do not offend local customs by wearing skimpy dresses (restrict wearing swimsuits and beachwear to the swimming pools and beaches).
Try not to make a flagrant display of wealth – your normal holiday spending money amounts to a small fortune to most of the local people.
For nice beaches, Please try to Blue bay beach hotel, Breezes beach hotel or Ras Nungwi.
Please feel free to contact me for any further information/assistance.

Im not sure when you plan on going but i was looking into going on a safari and then to Zanzibar next July. I've been trying to find someone interested but everyone has plans. I noticed that most everything has an extra single rate, plus it is more fun to experience a place with other people. If interested let me know.

Thanks!

Now this is what I mean, I would not be comfortable walking around the beach in bikini among local (islamic) people. This happened to me in India when going to remote beaches in Goa, having the locals all dressed up starring at me. I then moved to the most touristic beach, I think half Europe and a fair bit of Russia were there, and enjoyed myself much more.

So I would be very very grateful if someone (western woman?) could share their experience regarding Zanzibar. Looking for paradise.....

Sorry Mort70, I am going later next year....hope you find someone to go with.

Zanzibar is fine on the beach. Dressing is modest and swim wear is okay. However when in stone town it is good to wear decent clothing. People in Zanzibar appreciate tourists and really do not bother. Timing of your visit is crucial to be very decently dressed during the month of Ramadhan,
Enjoy

It's the same as being in Goa. If you are in a popular tourist spot, wearing a bikini will be fine. The same goes for your clothes. I don't remember getting any strange looks wearing a shorter skirt (just above the knees) but maybe i just didn't care at the time. I don't remember it being a deal. You might get a little more attention for being alone, but that's pretty much the same the world around. Most likely you'll connect with one of the overland groups that are in the tourist areas. Just look around you and play it by ear and have a great time!

Thanks everyone, I´ll see you out there!
