Your friend appears to be misinformed. A Google search for hostels in San Francisco and San Diego turned up multiple locations, and includes ratings by credible travel websites.
I would research a bit before deciding on an action plan. Note that SF and SD both have excellent municipal transit and light rail options.

That's a question only you can answer. Can one of the most diverse/complicated/vibrant/interesting states in the USA be worth your travel time for a month? Your call...

Is California solo worth it?
Are you kidding me? California (anywhere along the coast), Miami, New York, Dallas, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas are the easiest spots in the country to meet people. In particular, in California I'd recommend San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Davis as the easiest spots of all. (Just think college towns or beach towns and you'll do fine).
Also for those slightly older (25-40), wineries and hiking spots are good places to meet outgoing people. It is also possible to meet people at sporting events, amusement parks, and doing outdoor activities (go-kart racing, sailboats, golfing, etc.)
I personally met my wife in Huntington Beach and had former girlfriends I met in a few of the other towns I've mentioned. Even when a long-term connection wasn't made, I still met great people for a nice day at many of those places.

I think be in any part of the world one can easily travel alone as traveling alone is the best way to explore the land.Moreover when you visit a place you would find many people traveling on the same boat with you so you can always gel up with them.
