Need travel companion to Spain on Sep. 4-18, 2010

Hi there,

I just came back from a very similar trip. My tip is to learn a few Spanish phrases as not the locals (even tourist office people) speak English well. I managed to communicate but would have been better with a phrase book of some sort.

I took the train everywhere. I booked tickets ahead of time on the Renfe website - plus: good discounts, minus: couldn't change my tickets so I could stay longer in cities which I loved. I also booked tickets online for the bus (Alsa website) and it was quite easy. Renfe was a lot trickier to use but I managed with a lot of help from TripAdvisor and just trying the site on my own.

I used Alsa for Granada to Malaga as there was no train service. I was on a tight schedule so the train was my #1 choice overall since it was very comfortable and a lot faster than the bus (most of the time, although some cases, the time was about the same). There are buses between the cities you have listed, which would be cheaper but usually take more time than the train. There are cheap tickets available for the train but you have to book early since they sell out very quickly.

Cordoba is fine as a day trip. Seville and Granada will need more of your time. I especially loved Granada!

I visited Toledo as a day trip and thought that was sufficient.

I didn't have the chance to go to Barcelona and really regretted it. I hear such great things from everyone who has been there.
