D1: find a Youth Hostel in BeiJing, than take bus to Wangfujing Snack Street at evening. enjoy your first dinner in BeiJing.
and if possible, go to railway station to buy ticket to xi'an at D3 night. Z53 or Z19 from Beijing 9:00PM to xi'an 8:30 AM.
and if you want , book airplan from xi'an to guilin at D6. book airplan from guilin to shanghai at D8.
D2: take bus or tax to Tian An Men Square, suggest Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall. after your lunch, go to Palace Museum. DO NOT FORGET buy ticket. if you have any other free time, take bus No.2 to Tiantan Park( cross 4 station)
D3:The Great Wall at Badaling: take subway to Jishuitan, get out from EXIT A, go east to Okm, you will find a bus station. take bus 919 to Badaling. it will take about 1 hours. DO not take stopping train.
Remember to Get back to railway station before 8:00PM, you get to xi'an.
D4: xi'an. take taxi to Bell Tower District. call + 86 29 - 87233005 87231203 to book bedroom [Bell Tower International Youth Hostel], it 's very cheap, less than 100yuan/d. just have a rest. than go to HUI minority street. just 30mins. i strongly recommed buy some souvenirs. you can easily solve your lunch in HUI minority street. afternoon, take bus to Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses. evening restaurant: "Fan JI RouJiaMO" or "Chun FA Sheng"(Recommed).
D5:Free time in xi'an. Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a good area for free time.
D6: fly from xi'an to guilin. traveling on the Lijiang River by boat from guiling to Yangsuo. find a hostel in yangsuo. west street you can have a try.
D7:Drifting on the Dragon River in morning. afternoon,The Big Banyan Tree ,THE WHOLE OF THE MOON ,WATER CAVE .......
D8-D9: Shanghai. at D7, if you decide to goto shanghai. send mail to my mail . i will tell you more

Are youth hostels safe? If I stay at a decently priced hotel, how much do you think that would cost per night?
Also, how much would it cost to fly from Guilin to Shanghai? And then from Shanghai to Beijing?

less than 100 yuan/Day(no breakfast). if more than 150 yuan, just choose aonther.
i stay at Bell Tower International Youth Hostel before. there are lots foreign friends.
and recommed you buy a book called :2009中国自助游[陕西师范大学出版社]. you can find its english version in book store or Amazon.
