If you like beaches then the south of France would be good. Nice, Cannes, Monaco are all relatively close. I enjoyed Toulouse and Lyon also, but I think they more student towns.
You could try Luxembourg. It's only 3 hours from Paris on a train and is quite a nice, picturesque little city. A lot of people speak English in Luxembourg too.
I would reccommend Grenoble. It is the home of the Chamonix ski resort. There are195 miles of hiking trails or, if you've got little ones aboard, a cable car ride on the teleferique Grenbole-Bastille high above the Isere River. Teens can do whitewater rafting, horseback riding and paragliding options.
Re Luxembourg - it's now only 2 hours by direct TGV, although Luxembourg may be relatively expensive. Also, Luxembourg means you're outside of France.
For a variation to your French vacation, why not consider Marseilles and Provence? At Marseilles, you can go on boat tour of les Calanques and Chateau d'If. Camarque nearby is a national park, if that's something of interest to you and your family. Arles and Nimes both have Roman ruins, while Avignon boasts a most impressive Papal Palace.
Locations in Provence are close to one another, many within 20-30 minutes drive and can often be done as daytrips, if you choose a reasonably central location. Away from the cities mentioned, there are plenty of quiant villages perching atop hills/mountains, often with magnificent views.

I live in Paris, but I grown up in Marseilles, a southern city in France. I would recommend you to visit the French Riviera, like Nice, Monaco, Cannes and Saint-Tropez. These little cities are charming, but especially during the summer. If you plan to travel in France in early December, I would strongly recommend you to go to Lyon, a very beautiful city. Eachj year, a "Fête des Lumières" is organised in the city and this is amazing, the city becomes even more artistic than it is now, with lights and music games.
