I am not sure what you deem "the best" backpackers insurance. I imagine each company provides roughly the same cover depending on the tier you select. It does seem you are paying well over what you should be though. My cover was global and for 4 months and costs roughly £60. Try insureandgo.com
Yes I agree, I've found Insureandgo the cheapest online for backpackers insurance - with the best benefits as well. (£1k for baggage loss, whereas others were only £500)
