I travelled around Australia for 6 months and I would def say the highlights of my trip were Fraiser Island and Whitsunday Island - def a must see, such good fun and beautiful sights.

My boyfriend is coming out to Austrralia at the start of my WHV for 3 weeks. We're going in September, flying into Sydney. After that we're not too sure. Want to spend time seeing scenery, wildflife, walking etc. Give him a real taste of different parts of Australia and see main sights. We were thinking about flying to darwin then going to alice springs and uluru, and then to brisbane and east coast -maybe trying to squeeze in another city? Finishing in Sydney with a day in Blue Mountains. Does this sound reasonable for 3 weeks? I am usually guilty of trying to do too much. What would you recommend for 3 weeks in Australia?
Hi! There are many tourist top destinations in Sydney. Why don't you try Sydney Tower Restaurant Buffet, Blue Mountains Nature and Wildlife Day Tour? Sydney also offers a lot cheap hotel accommodation. You will never run out of options. Happy trip!

You can't see Sydney, Darwin, the Alice and Brisbane in three weeks. Darwin is best in the dry season - May to September.
The "classic" route is Sydney>Ayers Rock>Cairns. Forget Brisbane, considering you short time frame and stipulations on what you'd like to see, there are other places which would suit your purposes much better.
Only Qantas flies to/from Ayers Rock. Tiger Airways fly to Alice Springs from both Melbourne and Adelaide. It's another 460 kms to Ayers Rock (Uluru).
I would allow 5 or 6 nights for Ayers Rock and the Alice, then fly to Cairns. An overnight trip tp Cape Tribulation and the Daintree would be ideal - if you allow two nights then that's even better. The beach at Cape Trib is pristine. You can do a cruise to the GBR with from Cape Trib. Four Mile Beach at Port Douglas is lovely. GBR cruises are also available from Port D, Cairns and the Whitsundays. lists tour operators. And sailing.
The Blue Mountains can be done using public transport - catch the Lithgow train from Central Station to Katoomba then use the it's a lot cheaper than going on a bus tour. Also, the YHA at Katoomba is very good - if you stay overnight you'll have more time to explore. The Hunter Valley is wineries, you can't get there by public transport though, you'd either have to hire a car or do a winery tour. Darling Harbour is very pretty and the Sydney ferries are one of the best ways to see the harbour - not to mention they're way cheaper than the cruise boats that ply along there. If you only do one ferry trip, then the Manly ferry is the best. If you get the ferry to Watsons Bay, Doyles on the wharf have really good fish'n'chips, plus they have a bar. The Doyles Hotel further up is very nice - same type of food with a much higher price tag.
The at Darling Harbour is beautiful and serene. Coffee and cappuccino's on Darling Harbour are for tourists, it's overpriced and not that good. The locals go elsewhere.
In spite of what some people may say, accommodation in Sydney is not the cheapest - it's dearer than Melbourne. The YHA have a number of hostels in the CBD and their newest one is at Sydney Harbour in Cumberland Street - great location it's in the Rocks.

Thanks for your advice. We did quite a bit of reading and have got the trip sorted out now, fitting in what we wanted. I'm staying on in Australia so will do Cairns at a later date.
