Hi mate, travelling around Christmas you'll need to share with the hoards, pretty much everyone travels either up or down the coast at this time. I'd say most places like National Parks and caravan parks you'll need to book in advance. Not sure what the fine is if you're caught camping somewhere you shouldn't be, the police would probably just ask you to move along unless it's signposted no camping, then you'll be up for whatever the sign says. Most beach areas are signposted no camping.
