My company may be able to relocate me from Portland, OR to the UK to support our clients there. As I'll be going to the UK already employed, I'm really currently focused on where I could live that would be affordable (I'm not being payed tons of money) and features a great quality of life. I know that latter bit is different for everyone, so here's what I currently enjoy about Portland, OR:
Brighton..it has to be Brighton!
I would agree with Brighton,
and of course London (its an obvious one, but ticks lots of your boxes)
but in terms of affordability both are much more expensive than what youre used to,
Can I suggest Liverpool or Manchester?
Both interesting culturally, and great for nightlife, are diverse and have the buzz of the city.
and quite a bit cheaper to live in.
its true the south has more sunshine, but its not massively different.
and the great thing about the uk, is that you can travel to pretty much anywhere by train in a few hours, so you could always follow the sun in summer!
I would suggest for you manchester/liverpool/leeds?
All northern cities with great nightlife, public transport and so much more affordable in contrast to London for example. It ticks most your boxes, but obviously the weather is slightly colder than the south but it's not like England is good for weather anyways.
Maybe Newcastle also? Hanv't been there myself but its mean't to be a really nice city with an awesome nightlife Party On...!
I think Brighton is probably the best fit.
Consider Bristol, Manchester and Leeds too.
I'd vote for Bristol or Manchester. Both have a lot going on and not as expensive as the south east.
definitely brighton!! i spent the last 6months living there and had an amazing time. rent isn't the cheapest, but if you look hard i'm sure you can find a good deal.
plus you can walk pretty much everywhere, and i found most people to be very open minded and accepting. The city just has a very good vibe to it
Liverpool in the north or Brighton in the south. Liverpool is cheaper. Brighton is sunnier.
Up North is definately a cheaper place to live than the South but if i were you i would live out of the city you choose and commute in. London is expensive to live but i 60 miles away and its considerably cheaper and right on the beach!!! When the weather is good its great!
Leave Manchester out of the equation nowadays. Liverpool? Yes. but not Manchester. It's right up there with the most expensive places to live.
Greater Manchester County is amongst the most expensive counties in England for property overall. However, there are some very cheap places in Lancashire, with wages being still up there with what the south is paying it's workers.
