do you take a netbook traveling? at the moment im only going to OZ but who knows afte that. just wondered if its more of a burden having to look after such equipment on travels?
Hummm I'm interested to hear the answer to this too, haven't got one but was planning on buying one before my travels as my current laptop is too big to bring.

I have an Asus EeePC. It is okay. When I am in a hotel I don't leave it out in plain sight. When a maid or visitors are coming into my room it is out of sight! I lock it up when I go out. So far so good! I like it for long layovers at the airport. You can use it for checking bank accounts and moving money around safer than using a random computer in an internet shop. I like to listen to my home country live streaming radio stations when I am overseas while using the netbook.
PASSWORD PROTECT THE LAPTOP OR NETBOOK!
For me a netbook will never replace a full size laptop. I have large hands and cannot type fast on a netbook. I have gotten pretty fast just using 2 fingers but when I have lots of writing to do I prefer a full sized keyboard. I prefer using a mouse when I do any real typing and always have a small retractable type mouse. I have a fitted soft canvass case that I can shove the netbook and rubber mouse pad in. I also have an extension cord with me when I travel.
I also travel with a Flash Drive with Firefox on it. The FD with Firefox on it matches my home page on my big Mac at home. When I use that FD in an internet shop computer that computer screen looks just like my home computer screen. I have the same layout, same Bookmarks, same Toolbar and same preferences. I use a Memorex FD with U3 system. It is password protected. It fits in my pocket and safety boxes that are not big enough for laptops. I have used the FD with Firefox for 7 or 8 years but every now and then I pick up some bugs with it. I have to run virus checks on it all the time.
thanks for that! i have just brought the latest EeePC myself,seems to be causing me problems atm but im sure il figure it out. Im not to sure how efficient traveling with this netbook is going to be,although its tiny and i could litterally carry it everywhere,i would not want to take it on a hiking trek or something like that. as im i going to be staying in hostels for the majority of my year trip im worried about not having anywhere to keep it safe.i guess il just deal with that when i need to.

I always check for Asus and IE updates to keep the laptop current. My preference is to work off of Firefox for almost everything when using my computers.
You can always set up the Flash Drive with Firefox. I traveled with that in place of a laptop for many years.

its mainly the hard drives,i was confused that they are split, the netbook is sold as 250gb hard drive but 1 drive is for backup purposes?correct? i was planning on taking my extensive music collection but i may just trim it down for my travels. im not sure i i understand what a flash drive is??

I don't have a problem with memory. I could get by with only 80 - no music crap on it and no games.
I think the EeePc has a solid state HD.
My EeePC has more memory than my Mac and my old Toshiba.

take a blackberry or something similar, they are basicly the same thing as a PC. just turn off the data until your in the wifi zone. loads smaller that lugging around a netbook/laptop/tablet and they can do the keeping in touch when there isn't a internet cafe about.
IMHO.. It all depends on how you are traveling and what you think you need it for. I have in the past traveled with and without one. For my particular style of travel (where I am somewhat based for short periods of time) I find it very useful. Checking emails, keeping in touch back home or just seeing what is in the local area, a netbook works well. Also realize that I do have my own web server, where I can download my eBooks and music; and an FTP server where I can upload my pictures.
In these instances I am flying and usually driving a rental car. So the "bulk" (3 lbs or so) is not an issue. If I am hiking, a smart phone serves some of the same functions, but not as well. If you blog about your travels I can guarantee you that is much much easier with a netbook than a small keyboard on a phone. And for including pictures on the blog, you should forget about the phone. And, although screen sizes on phone devices are getting bigger, trying to read some pages can be a downright nightmare.
For me, I would recommend taking the netbook; but as always its up to how you want to travel.
