What is the average bag size to take? Thailand and Oz, plan to be away for a year or longer...

Im going to Malaysia, Bali, Oz and NZ in Sept for hopefully a year or more and I've bought a 40l. Loads of comments on here have said go smaller like a 40 or 50 because you'd regret it any bigger so thought I'd trust them lol. Sounds small but actually looks a decent size, especially when its on! Im gonna try to travel light which is really unlike me but figured its a good lesson to stop me taking too much. I reckon I can fit the bare essentials plus some luxuries definitley. Clothes etc can be washed every week or just bought as I go along I figure.
Also I'm quite a small frame so anything bigger than a 40 looks huge and would get so heavy.

Hmmm, mine is 60L plus a little bag on the front which i'll use during the day and as hand luggage. I'm quite small too, but I tried it on and it's okay. I have the option to pull it too so i'll be fine

I had a 50L bacdpack when I had a working holiday in Australia. I think that will be enough for a female backpacker. Consider how heavy you can carry. 50L would be really fine. But don't forget to bring a hand bag or small backpack for daily use.
