Although I'm not there when you are, I recommend the Wake Up hostel in Sydney its a little pricey thought but its defiantly worth the little extra!
5 weeks is a very short time, bet you wont want to leave when it comes to your flight back!

Hi Katie,
I will be in Sydney on Jan 27. I will also be traveling alone form the U.S. (27 years old). My trip is short (10 days) so I will only be visiting Sydney. I'm also checking out hostels and have seen good reviews on Blue Parrot and Wake Up.
