Hi everyone,
Wow you suffer travel sickness yet the ferry doesnt bother you? Im the opposite. Thats a good start tho.
Id suggest Amsterdam to Brussels and Brugge, these are wonderful small towns for those who want a relaxing holiday. Especially Brugges. I think you can even take a ferry to Belgium from England and skip out Amsterdam?
Anyway these places are on your way to Paris.
France are Germany in my opinion are both great for countryside and nice villages (as well as Paris/Berlin). Consider regions like Bavaria, Champagne, French Riviera, although I think the countryside all around these counties is nice and would be quite car friendly once you get over the driving on the right side of the road thing.
As for Alps theres Switzerland bordering them. The Jungfrau region around Grindlewald is quite beautiful. Also in the French side, Chamonix (Mont Blanc) is also stunning (although fairly far from Paris), nearby Annecy I haven't been to but is also supposed to be beautiful, a bit like a Venice in France.
Congratulations!
Just to give you an idea of the distances you could cover in the time you have, Contiki do a 2 week coach tour that leaves London takes in Paris, Avignon, Beaune, Nice, Monacco, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Venice, up to Austria with a lovely view of the Alps, Munich, Amsterdam and back to the UK. This includes at least 24 hours in all the big cities. So you should be able to ferry to the Netherlands, Belgium or France and actually see quite a lot of countryside in 2 weeks.
Central France is lovely and well worth spending some time in. The south coast between France, Monacco and Italy is spectacular and you can find good camp grounds all over the place. You should be able to drive (one way or another) via the alps, northern Italy, Southern France and Paris and select routes that are off the main highways and still enjoy time at each place you stop. £2000 sounds like a good buget if you are camping too. Maybe the contiki website says where they camp to give you some ideas about that as well!
Have a great honeymoon!
i think its a great idea to celebrate your marriage by enjoying yourself with the beautiful sights and sounds of europe but i think would it not be good if you stick to one place and spend your time and energy seeing it and exploring it!! too much to do in little time and with little money might exhaust you and leave you with no time to relax or enjoy each other's company - if you like alps, just go to ----- its a tourists paradise and you will have access to everything from fine dining to beautiful locations, mountains and glaciers and great shopping and museums to zoos and parks and all, you can stay in hotels that are not so expensive and enjoy all the cities very nicely too.. same goes for france and holland, spend time where you can acutally relax and have a great time!!
2000 pounds for 14 days and 2 people is a good and comfortable budget if you travel by car and tent.
Both Amsterdam and Paris have camping sites right ouside the city. You just have to consider whether you want to commute, this takes time and money. (Taking the car into the city is not a good idea.)
I would advice against planning the trip based upon what contiki promises, simply because you are self-driving. You do not have bus drivers working in shifts that let you get some shut-eye on the bus. Moreover the Contiki schedule is just ridiculous. Perfect if all you want to do is get drunk on the bus with the other teens taking the tour, but not if you actually want to see some things.
However, Amsterdam-Rhine Valley-Paris would be feasible if you split it 4 days each.
