Hello everyone.
Yes you will need vaccinations. Not totally sure on how this is done in the UK health system in Australia we simply book an appointment with a doctor (there are also some doctors that specialise in travel). This is best done about 3-4 weeks before you leave (as some immunisations/treatments may take a while to sink in). You'll need quite a few (ie. Malaria, Hep A/B, Tetanus, Polio, maybe Cholera and there's a few more) - the doctor should know what you need, knowledge/records of what you've had in the last 10 years will help.
For travel insurance there's a lot of companies that do this online, you simply state where you're going, how long and a few other details and you can have a look at some policies there, the most important thing to look for here is medical/hospital cover, and if you're carying expensive things (ie. netbook, smartphones) take note of what they cover.
Given that this is the first time you are going abroad - get prepared for a culture shock! Although Nepal is such a beautiful country so I think you will experience this in a good way. Kathmandu is a very interesting city and worth a few days, although I think you get the most out of Nepal by getting out into its landscape (Himalayas) as well as seeing some village life. In Kathmandu you will feel most comfortable in Thamel, where most tourists go. There's a lively, friendly and comfortable atmosphere here and a good area to have a drink and share stories with other travellers. I'd recommend you venture out and take a look at Boudhanath Stupa and Durbar Square (the one in Patan, there's a couple different ones) as they are fascinating places.
Also keep in mind that July is in the rainy season.
Hope that helps!

Wow, thank you for a very in-depth reply, I shall take all that on board, one of my friends lives there so will probably join in with everything he has planned, however I shall defiantly try and look into some of those places you suggested, they sound right up my alley.
Thanks again Erik, shall keep this advice close, seems I have a lot of planning and organising to do.
Cheers.
MKC.
