The cost of living in Australia has increased significantly. As now a family investment is $250/week approx... So now you can estimate your financial matter. As i would suggest to keep the budget a little more as per the requirements and 'coz of the increase of cost of general amenities.

1000 pounds a month is prob good approximation for say Thailand, that would be living fairly comfortably, but not being too extravagent (ie decent food/accom, but without doing heaps of shopping or drinking in bars a lot) - my guess is Laos/Cambodia will be cheaper than this, and Singapore/Malaysia a bit dearer. Costs also depend a lot on what you do, if you do a lot of snorkelling trips and travel to many different places (rather than staying a longer time at a few) then this will add significantly to your costs.
My advice (even though I'm Australian) would be to avoid Australia, unless you can save a bit more. This is because the $AU is at record highs at the moment and you'll probably need 2000 pounds/month each or more, as well as another 400 pounds for a return fare from somewhere like Bali. I reckon it'd be better to stay in SE Asia as enjoy yourselves more here, and perhaps save Australia for another time when you have more money (as well as time, as it's a huge country to explore).
If you think 6 months is too long for the South-East Asian countries you listed (it could be done fairly well within 5 months) then instead of Australia I'd consider taking a look at one (max two) of: Nepal/India/Phillipines, or Indonesia (beyond Bali which is aparrantly full of filthy Aussies anyway, if you aren't already sick of them in Thailand! :P). Your money will also go pretty far in these countries.
Hi! I have a question about a route through southeast asia (vietnam, laos, cambodia, thailand).
My friends and I are visiting for 6 weeks in may-june, and plan to visit all 4 countries in a loop type route. We are flying into Hanoi and planning on doing the north of Laos before coming south through Thailand then back up to Hanoi by traveling through Vietnam. We are pretty inexperienced in the region and I wonder if anyone could give me some input on whether this is a good plan.

Sa Pa (3 nights)
Luang Prabang/ Vang Vieng (4 nights)
Gibbon Experience in Laos (any thoughts on including this?) (2 nights)
Chiang Mai (2 nights)
Bangkok (3 nights) (is it best to fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok or is bus doable?)
Thai islands in south (6-7 nights.. is it best to do western islands like krabi, phuket or eastern islands like samui?)
Bangkok (from islands in south, can we fly cheaply to Cambodia or must we go back through Bangkok?)
Angkor Wat (2 nights)
HCMC (2-3 nights)
Nha Trang (2 nights)
Hoi An (2 nights)
Halong Bay cruise (2 nights)
Back to Hanoi
I would appreciate any thoughts on how this itinerary looks or advice on how to improve it. Also, recommendations as to which cities we should fly to versus bus to. Thank you so much!
