Travelling to Oz beginning of Sept, help or advice needed!

Hi all,

Hey Robin 2011
I am planning on heading to oz beginning of october. It will also be my first time travelling alone. I am planning on going for 6-8 months. Starting in sidney and than going to do the east coast. Planning on getting my work visa as well.
I've been reading a lot of post on here for a few months now and what I've come to learn is, it's better to book your hostels for the first week. Than as you move you'll find places to stay. Except for christmas and new years, I heard booking early is better.
As for luggage, only bring the essentials for clothes as you can buy stuff over there.

I cab recommend Kathmandu for rucksakes if you can find a store near to you, the website only have a small selection if rucksakes!

I'm heading to aus in December on a wh visa, and very excited!!

Starting out in Australia is such an easy way to begin travelling, despite being nervous (we all are!), there isn't too much that can go wrong and people will always help you out.

If you're just looking to get here and don't have any particular care for any airline then go with whatever is cheapest (check the stopover time though, you will change planes somewhere and don't want to be stuck doing nothing for 14 hours for the sake of a fiver)
For something really low budget maybe try Air Asia, you would have to book two flights with them (London-Kuala Lumpar, Kuala Lumpar- Brisbane/Melbourne/Perth). They're especially good if you don't know when you'll return home as you can just book one way and sort the other half when you want to leave Australia.

I wouldn't recommend more than a 70litre rucksack. whatever size you buy remember you will defo fill it with unwanted clothes and you'll regret having to carry it everywhere. keep luggage well under 20kg!

Although its not necessary its probably advisable for peace of mind that you book a hostel for when you first arrive (especially if your flight lands late). Often hostels have free shuttle services from airports which work out nicely too. If staying a week its often cheaper to book directly (via phone/email) with hostels as some have week rates (i.e. 1 night free). You won't get this on hostelworld normally.

Enjoy!
