With six months, I would consider getting an Amtrak USA pass for the first 45 days and for the last 45 days--and then get buses or rental cars for moving around during the 3 months in-between.
This way you can travel around a whole lot at the beginning and the end--and then spend a lot of time in the middle of your trip in the Rocky Mountain areas by staying in just the Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado areas.
With 6 months in the US, you might give some thought to buying a car/van, tour the US, sell it when finished. Send me a PM if you have any interest in driving around the US. Mike
