After looking for an affordable suite hotel for 2 families of 5 traveling in July to Montreal a became very dejected. I found what looks to be a large 4 bedroom vacation rental fully equipped. The kitchen alone will save us a ton. Does anyone know anything about airbnb?
It seems more people are finding 'airbnb' and asking about them. I can personally say I have used them and the experience was great. In April, there was a small TP meet-up in Chicago (including one of TP's owners and his family).
Like you, we kept checking hotels as April is low season for tourism but hotel prices were exceptionally high with no real deals whatsoever. (Wasn't due to the NATO Summit as that's happening as I type.)
Katie (Wonkerer) did some checking and found some condo properties through 'airbnb'. I looked at the links and chose one which would be suitable for Katie, my husband (beerman) and me. We rented a 3 bed room just in case a TP member's plans changed and she could also attend.
Regardless, our experience was excellent. The company was easy to use, efficient and you communicate directly with the condo owner via airbnb's website. It allows you to ask questions about the property that may not be stated in the listing. If you find one you like, check the reviews before booking.
Our condo owner showed up as we were 'checking-in' to give us keys and make sure everything was to our liking. Even sat and had a beer with us.
Do not consider 'fully equipped' to mean you'll have all the cooking equipment you may want but usually enough were improv works. Otherwise, most other amenities are provided (towels, soaps, toilet paper, etc.). We do bring our own shampoos and toiletries.
Some owners will pre-stock a few items in the fridge, such as orange juice, butter, and sometimes eggs and milk. Also, in the condo world - the previous visitor will leave food stuffs they were not able to use before departure. We found onions and something else useful.
Again, check the reviews before booking a particular property. But, as for airbnb and how they handle the bookings - I recommend them as a company. I has happy Katie had found them. I did the booking and was a very satisfied customer.
