Basically me and my friends have never been to America and need help planning a big trip for 2014. We mainly want to go to New York, Miami, Orlando, Vegas and Los Angeles. What is the best route to take and what cities inbetween are good to visit? We want to see things but also picked these places for nightlife too. Don't mind how to travel or type of accommodation. Any more details just ask! Thanks
Something I found recently is an app you can download (or look at it online) called On The Way App (.com). It is really cool and you can type in the route you will be taking and shows you tons of activities, food places, shopping, along the way. I can't wait to use it for me next trip. That can help you find things to do along the way.
Sounds like you will be travelling all across the country. Sounds like fun. If you are staying with a medium or large group sometimes it is more beneficial to stay in a vacation condo or townhome to save money. You can find these places like at VacationRoost or if you are going to spend less time at each of these places you can also choose between hotels (that might have less space). Make sure you know how much you want to spend and break it down each day (food, housing, car/plane travel etc).
I would alter that itinerary slightly from New York, Miami, Orlando, Vegas and Los Angeles to New York, Washington, Miami, Orlando, Vegas, Seattle, Portland and San Francisco
You don't miss that much by omitting LA!
Mate I'm going to stop you there and say don't bother with LA. Everyone told me not to go, but I felt like I had to tick it off, went and had a rubbish time! Instead, go to San Francisco, a million times better and you won't regret it!
Also, add in New Orleans if you want a few drinks! Best party place in USA without exaggeration!!
If you're heading to Vegas, make sure you add in the Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam. Also, if you can afford it, pay for the helicopter and white water rafting at the Grand Canyon. It cost £250, so we didn't do it, but we regret not doing it soooo much!
As someone who lived in Los Angeles for many years (and now lives just an hour from San Francisco), it should be noted that there is a big difference between visiting the downtown section of Los Angeles versus visiting the beach areas near Los Angeles.
Downtown Los Angeles is junk, has terrible air quality, has a large ghetto area just south of downtown, and is a waste of time as far as visiting. Only thing there worth going for is the shopping in the Fashion District on Sunday--otherwise, forget it.
The beach areas are another story. Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Malibu Beach or Laguna Beach are all worth a look during the summer months. Having said that, you can find good beaches (not great ones) in other areas out of Los Angeles--most notably south in San Diego or farther north Santa Barbara or Santa Cruz.
The only other thing to go to LA for is amusement parks (Disneyland/California adventure or Universal Studios) or else to visit the Getty Museum or the Huntington Library and Gardens. When I lived in LA, there was a survey done by the local paper (LA Times) of what people who lived there most liked to do on the weekend and the #1 response was "I like to leave LA and go to places nearby" (Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, San Diego, or Las Vegas were the top 4 responses by people as to where they liked to go). This shows you that even the people who live there can't wait to get out-of-town.
