Cuban beaches and snorkeling

I'm thinking of doing an 8 day tour of Cuba later this year with a few days on the beach after the tour. Apart from relaxation my main reason for wanting some beach time is to do some snorkeling; Varadero seems to be the obvious choice when it comes to beach resorts but I've heard the snorkeling isn't that great there. Can anyone recommend a nice beach town with good snorkeling?

I don't know of a good beach town with decent off-the-beach snorkelling anywhere in Cuba. It's a big island though so there could be lots of places I'm not aware of.

It also depends on where you're ending your tour... if you're at the west end near Havana then the two resorts at Jibacoa (Villas Jibacoa Cameleon & Breezes Jibacoa) both have excellent off-the-beach snorkelling and diving. Jibacoa is located between Havana and Varadero.

If you're in eastern Cuba then Playa Esmeralda is good too. The resorts on that beach are Sol Rio de Luna y Mares and the 5 star Adults Only Paradisus Rio de Oro.

On the south side there's okay snorkelling near Trinidad (a great colonial town and World UNESCO Heritage Site) close to the tiny village of La Boca. Some excellent casa particulars (Cuban version of a bed & breakfast) in that area too.

Good luck with your research and have fun, Cuba is an interesting place...

Cheers,
Terry

Thanks Terry, that's really helpful. The tour finishes in Havana, so I'll check out the resorts at Jibacoa.

I'm sure your tour agency has given you lots of decent info, but you might find these interesting...

2.) Crime & Scams: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g147270-c140774/Cuba:Caribbean:Crimes.And.Scams.In.Cuba.html

Anything else you need, let me know.

Thanks Terry. The money situation does sound very confusing so I'll have to make sure I've researched it. I looked at those resorts that you suggested and they both look perfect!

I (immodestly, haha) think my money exchange explanation above is the best you'll find anywhere... if you have any confusion remaining after reading it let me know...

Cheers,
Terry
