If you're a nervous traveller without much experience then Australia is an excellent choice. As I've mentioned on this forum before you're choosing a destination country that speaks (sort of, haha) the very same language, listens to mostly the same music, eats much the same food, wears mostly the same clothes, shares a long and close history with your homeland, etc. etc. etc.
Australia is not intimidating or difficult in the slightest. It has an excellent infrastructure for backpackers and budget travellers. Honestly, it's a really really easy place for a first time traveller - but it's just different enough to be fun and exciting.

As for "how long you should stay and what should you see" those are questions only you can answer right now... do you like big cities or small towns or nature?... what are your likes/dislikes?... how long are you planning to travel?... how much of your time will be in Australia only?... are you into museums and opera or underground raves and punk?... etc...

I am also looking at travelling next year round about that area, in regards to what you want to do out there i think thats best to plan then and there in the moment.
